What is S.H.MonsterArts?
S.H.MonsterArts is a spinoff of the popular BANDAI SPIRITS S.H.Figuarts action figure series that focuses on monster characters. In keeping with the S.H.Figuarts tradition, the S.H.MonsterArts figures aim to replicate creatures as accurately as possible, with faithful detail, complex colors, and high posability.
Until now, S.H.MonsterArts has mainly showcased famous kaiju from movies. We are proud to announce the debut of the first video game character in the lineup. Nargacuga from “Monster Hunter” is also the series’ first quadrupedal character, giving the design team a chance to apply its extensive know-how in bringing this unique monster to life with faithful and immersive detail.
What is “Monster Hunter”? What is Nargacuga?
Undoubtedly some S.H.MonsterArts fans may be wondering what Nargacuga and “Monster Hunter” are.
“Monster Hunter” is the name of a long-running action RPG game series produced by Capcom. The player takes the role of a hunter who accepts quests to battle against various monsters. By fighting, defeating, and repelling monsters, players obtain items that can be delivered to complete the quests, allowing them to obtain better gear and weapons, which allows them to aim for even bigger challenges.
The first “Monster Hunter,” released for home game consoles in 2004, introduced the world to the idea of cooperating with friends to hunt powerful monsters. It proved such a hit that it became a social phenomenon, spawning more than ten sequels in the years to follow. Today it is more than just a game; it is a popular multimedia franchise with anime, novels, and manga as well.
The center of the game, of course, are the monsters themselves. Each has its own characteristics and personality for players to discover and use in their hunting tactics. As a player’s hunter rank rises from completing quests, even more vicious monsters stand between them and victory. How best to beat them? Weaken your target by destroying heads, wings, or tails? Charge straight at a monster’s weak point? There are many strategies, from carefully choosing the proper weapons to cooperating with friends. That’s the charm and the pull of the series.
Now, let’s talk about the item in question: Nargacuga.
Nargacuga is classified in the game as a Large Monster. It first appeared in the 2008 game “Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G.” A flying dragon-like creature that lives deep in forests, it is covered in a scaly dark hide. It was used to illustrate the package for the game, and also starred as the most difficult G rank level quest in the game, forcing untold numbers of hunters to struggle in defeating it. This incredibly memorable monster went on to appear in many other “Monster Hunter” games as well.
This powerful monster appears in the latest game in the series, 2019‘s “Monster Hunter World: Iceborne,” where it terrifies hunters with a ferocious tail-swinging attack. Nargacuga truly symbolizes the challenges faced by hunters in the game series.
The Incredible S.H.MonsterArts Nargacuga
This collaboration between two celebrated series, “S.H.MonsterArts” and “Monster Hunter,” focuses on Nargacuga as seen in the newest title, “Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.” We worked closely with “Iceborne” art director Kaname Fujioka to make this faithful portrayal. It is both posable and as accurate as possible, using all available references and resources to capture every detail of the creature in its entirety, even parts not normally visible on-screen, such as its back. What’s more, a detachable tail and optional destroyed version let fans re-create familiar moments. An angry head and a tail posed in a charging form are included to bring Nargacuga to life.
The high quality “Monster Hunter” series deserves a high quality action figure. That’s what the S.H.MonsterArts figure delivers!
In the next installment, on April 7, we will explore the details, the sculpting, the posability, and the accessories of the S.H.MonsterArts Nargacuga!
